​​The cycle of studies leading to the doctoral degree in Educational Sciences has the duration of 3 years (full-time schedule), which corresponds to 180 ECTS. This cycle of Studies is primarily aimed at the development of: systematic understanding capabilities in a scientific field of study; research competencies, skills and methods associated with a scientific field; the ability to conceive, design, adapt and perform significant research, respecting the requirements imposed by the academic standards for quality  ​a​nd integrity. This cycle of studies includ​es the development of an original and especially designed thesis for this purpose, appropriate to the knowledge branch and doctoral speciality. Although there is no mandatory curriculum component, doctoral students may be advised to do some course units, selected according to the applicant's training and research work to be developed.  ​​

Information note:
The application process for the Doctorate in Educational Sciences (without curricular component) takes place in accordance with the following procedures:
1. Expression of interest in the doctorate in educational sciences, doctorate without coursework, is made by filling in a form to be sent to the Course Secretary.
2. Once the expression of interest has been received, the Director of the CC-DCE sends the documentation to the Coordinator of the Specialty in question, as well as to the Director of the Department in which the specialty is located.
3. The Coordinator analyzes the expression of interest in order to check that the candidate meets the access criteria.
4. If the decision resulting from point 3 is negative, the Course Director will issue an order of non-acceptance, and the decision will be communicated to the candidate.
5. If the decision under point 3 is positive, the Coordinator, in conjunction with the Department Director, will propose a supervisor who will accompany the writing of the research project.
6. Applications are kept open permanently.
7. Once the research project has been drawn up under the supervision of the proposed supervisor, the candidate submits their application on the Academic Portal, submitting the following documents: 
 Research Project; 
Term of acceptance from the proposed supervisor(s); 
Curriculum Vitae;
Certificates of qualifications;
8.  Once the documents referred to in point 7 have been submitted, the applications will be analyzed and ranked by a selection panel, according to the vacancies defined, made up of the Coordinator (who presides), three to five members and one to two alternate members, appointed by the respective Department and approved by the Scientific Council. Minutes will be taken of the selection and ranking meeting. 
9. The minutes, the selection list and the candidates' files are sent to the Chair of the Scientific Council for consideration and approval by the Scientific Council.
10. In accordance with UMinho's Academic Regulations, the decision on the acceptance of applications by the CC takes place in March, June, September and December of each year, and the results must be published by the 15th of the respective month.




Application conditions
The following are eligible to apply for the PhD in Educational Sciences: kindergarten teachers, primary, secondary and higher education teachers, trainers, consultants, managers and evaluators of educational projects, and other professionals working in educational organizations or with educational valences, who hold a master's degree in Education/Educational Sciences or related areas, or have a particularly relevant academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized as attesting to the ability to carry out this Cycle of Studies by IE's Scientific Council. Those interested should consult the specific qualifications for access to each of the specialties on the IE website.

Selection of Candidates
Type of course
The process of selecting and ranking candidates for the Cycle of Studies includes an analysis of the candidates' curriculum vitae and a research pre-project. Curriculum analysis focuses, among other things, on: academic qualifications (in terms of suitability for the specialty and classification obtained); publications and communications presented at scientific meetings; participation in research projects; and professional experience.

Description


The course promotes a training profile centered on the capacity for epistemological and methodological reflection around educational phenomena, and also on the ability to investigate and intervene in educational contexts, involving advanced knowledge of paradigms, theories and respective conceptual apparatus in a particular specialty of PhD, as well as the design and development of research projects in education in this specialty, producing new knowledge in compliance with ethical standards and critically responding to socio-educational challenges.

Key learning outcomes


1. Know conceptual and methodological frameworks in the field of Educational Sciences in terms of a research object;
2. Design an innovative research project suited to the nature of Education Sciences in the context of training highly qualified professionals;
3. Contribute critically and fundamentally to the analysis and discussion of issues related to Educational Sciences in professional action contexts;
4. Develop investigative, ethical and training skills in order to disseminate research results in the academic community and in society;
5. Develop intervention skills within the scope of specialized professional actions, by transposing and recontextualizing the knowledge produced through research.

Completion of this doctoral course allows carrying out a post-doctoral research activity.

Access to this cycle of studies requires an application to the Institute of Education of the University of Minho.

Formal requirements


1. Candidates who hold a degree and master’s degree in the areas defined by the Scientific Council for each of the specialties may be admitted.
2. Holders of a degree who hold a particularly relevant school or scientific curriculum recognized by the SC of IE as attesting the ability to carry out this cycle of studies may be admitted.
3.In the specialties in question, the holders of a school, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized by the SC as attesting the ability to carry out this cycle of studies may also be admitted to the competition in this specialty.
4. In addition to the admission criteria mentioned, in some specialties candidates must, under penalty of exclusion, possess mastery, oral and written, of the Portuguese language.
5. Only candidates who obtain at least 50 points (on the scale from 0 to 100) will be admitted in the set of serial criteria.

Recommended requirements


Recommended prerequisites relate to the autonomy of students, and preferably to the mastery of the reading, writing and speaking skills in one or more languages other than Portuguese. It is also relevant to hold a master's degree and/or professional or research practice of high merit.
