The Advanced Scientific Internships (ECA PhD) are available for doctoral students and the Postdoctoral Training Programmes (Postdoc) for teachers and/or researchers with a doctorate who wish to undertake a period of study or develop an individual research project at the University of Minho, in accordance with a work plan previously approved by the Scientific Council of the Institute of Education and which integrates one of the areas of knowledge (mentioned in the application and admission form) for which the organizational unit awards the doctorate degree.
Advanced Scientific Doctoral Internship - 3rd cycle training (ECA PhD)
1. Framework and Duration - Advanced Scientific Doctoral Internships (ECA PhD) allow the development of an individual work project, involving research or training activities, by a doctoral student enrolled at another university, under the supervision of a UMinho lecturer and/or doctoral researcher.
Duration: between 3 months and 1 year.
2. Fees (tuition) - For enrolling and attending the ECA PhD, a registration fee is due, which includes individual personal accident insurance, as well as an attendance fee, proportional to the time spent at UMinho, based on the amount set annually for doctoral student fees.
Applications are submitted individually to the Scientific Council (SC) of the Institute of Education.
The application for admission must be addressed to the President of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Education, accompanied by:
1. Application Form for Admission to the Advanced Scientific Doctoral Internship | Attendance Fees (After completing the form, send it to the email address of the department to which your Supervisor belongs);
3. Curriculum Vitae;
4. Proof of PhD registration at the institution of origin;
5. Declaration of support for the ECA PhD from the PhD supervisor(s) at the home institution;
6. Favorable opinions, in docUM, regarding the proposed ECA PhD and the content of the work plan, from the teacher and/or researcher at the Institute of Education responsible for supervising the work program and the Department Directors.
4. Admission and Registration
Admission to the ECA PhD is the responsibility of the CC of the Institute of Education.
After admission by the CC, registration is carried out at the Academic Management Services Unit (USGA) within 20 days.
In duly justified cases, namely for foreign candidates, registration may be authorized after this deadline, subject to a favorable opinion from the President of the Board of the Institute of Education.
The candidacy for an ECA PhD lapses if, 6 months after its admission by the CC, there has been no registration with the USGA.
5. Report and Evaluation
At the end of the ECA PhD, the researcher must, within one month, submit an Activity Report to the Scientific Council (SC) of the Institute of Education, (
ECA PhD Report Template) which must state how the ECA PhD enabled the objectives proposed in the work plan to be achieved. The report must be accompanied by the opinions of the teacher and/or researcher who supervised the ECA.
The CC will assess the Activity Report and then inform the doctoral student, the IE UMinho supervisor and the Academic Management Services Unit (USGA) of the outcome of the assessment process.
6. Diploma - Successful completion of the ECA PhD confers the right to a diploma/certificate, issued by the USGA, to which the established fees apply.

Post-Doctoral Training (Postdoc)
1. framework and duration
Postdoctoral Program (Postdoc): allows the development of an individual work project, which may involve training, research or teaching activities, developed by a professor and/or doctoral researcher belonging to another institution or organization, with the supervision of a UMinho professor and/or doctoral researcher.
Duration: between 6 months and 3 years.
2. Fees (tuition) - For enrolling and attending Postdoc, a registration fee is due, which includes individual personal accident insurance, as well as an attendance fee, proportional to the time spent at UMinho, based on the amount set annually for doctoral student fees.
Applications are submitted individually to the Scientific Council (SC) of the Institute of Education.
The application for admission must be addressed to the President of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Education, accompanied by:

The Scientific Council of the Institute of Education decided at its meeting on December 15, 2021:
"During the period of post-doctoral training, there must be a mandatory period of 3 months in person at the University of Minho, which may be continuous or discontinuous in time, depending on the activities that will be carried out within the scope of the established work plan."
